Nxai Pan is a large salt pan lying to the north of the main Nata road around 40km to the east of Maun.
Although there is some resident game, Nxai really comes alive during the green season, December to April, when the rains turn this usually dry and parched landscape green and fill the seasonal waterholes. Game migrates out from the dry season water sources of Okavango and Chobe into a vast hinterland, in which Nxai Pan serves as a significant focus.
Traditionally this area has been serviced only by mobile safaris and self-drive campers, but this all changed in early 2009 with the completion of the area's first permanent lodge, the excellent Nxai Pan Camp.
