The region to the north of Nairobi is dominated by the massifs of the
Aberdares and
Mount Kenya, whose well-watered and fertile slopes are generally highly populous and therefore of little safari interest.
Around these central highlands the land falls away across increasingly arid and less populated grasslands towards the surrounding semi-deserts, providing areas of considerably greater safari interest. Far off to the east,
Meru is a relatively remote, little visited and attractive game park.
Laikipia East includes the well known reserves of Lewa, Samburu and Shaba, as well as some relatively wild rangelands ideal for camel treks.
Laikipia North is an area where old colonial cattle rangelands are being converted back to wildlife and contains some of the country's most luxurious lodges.
