Samburu

Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves are situated to the west of the Great North Road around 100km north of Mount Kenya.

This far north the land is hot and arid. The reserves are watered by the Ewaso Ngiro river, whose palm-lined path winds through otherwise parched acacia scrub and sparse grasslands. As well as many of the usual suspects, this dry land is home to some less common species such as Grevy's zebra, gerenuk and reticulated giraffe.

Considering the remoteness and subtle nature of Samburu, it is surprising to find that this area has probably the highest guest bed density of any game area in East Africa. That said, the better lodges are usually able to work their areas with sufficient elegance to keep you out of the worst of the traffic.
