This southern area of Laikipia is centred on the town of Nanyuki, whose airstrip acts as the hub for the whole of northern Kenya.
Most lodges in this area are on Ol Pejeta, a large conservancy which covers the open ranges to the north of the saddle between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, the most important sanctuary for black rhino in Kenya.
The eastern part of the reserve is the more heavily touristed, is generally accessed by road and contains the more mainstream lodges.
The western side more usually forms part of a flying safari, has a distinctly wilder feeling and contains much smaller tented safari camps, the best of which is probably
Ol Pejeta Rhino Camp.
