The western side of Laikipia above the Rift Valley lakes of
Baringo and
Bogoria is dominated by Mukutan, an enormous private ranch owned by Kuki Gallmann, author of the book 'I dreamed of Africa'.
As late as the 1980's this area was a functioning cattle ranch. Kuki removed the cattle in order to turn the land over to wildlife. Unfortunately the species to take first advantage has been the leleshwa plant, which has expanded to turn this once largely open range into a vast impenetrable thicket. There is game here, but finding it is tough.
Mukutan has some really interesting accommodation, but with the drawbacks of the location, these are generally only visited by guests who have a burning desire to meet Kuki herself.
