For anyone used to travelling through Africa, the Kenya Coast can come as quite a shock ... for it is here more than anywhere that one encounters real mass tourism.
Each year hundreds of thousands of tourists fly into Mombasa, mainly from Europe, on cheap package holidays. To service this traffic, vast stretches of coastline have become virtually wall to wall with huge all-inclusive resorts.
The best way to avoid the crowds is to head for the blissful backwaters on the extreme
North Coast or
South Coast.
But even here quality options are rare and generally rather pricey, so much so that you might be better off combining with one of the islands off the
Tanzanian Coast.
