Along with Zanzibar, Mombasa has historically been one of the most important of the Arab trading ports on the Indian Ocean coastline.
To this day Mombasa remains the main commercial hub for the country, with a large container port connecting to the main Nairobi highway and railway.
The modern city dwarfs the old quarter and whilst the area around Fort Jesus may provide some significant historical interest, ultimately Mombasa is too big and busy for most people to want to include in a safari.
We therefore very rarely book hotels here. When we do we tend to use the
Lotus Hotel, which is at least located near to the historic quarter.
