Maralal is a pleasantly dusty rural frontier town on the main road north to Lake Turkana.
The town is situated in a broad open valley, flanked to the east especially by gentle forested hills. The road up here passes through some some decent wildlife areas and there is also a small game sanctuary close by the town itself.
Over the first weekend of August each year a camel regatta of some repute is held here. The professional event is a serious race, but the amateur race is rather more fun and adventurous visitors are welcome to hire a camel and join in.
Since we do not operate any overland trips to the north, we very rarely have occasion to include Maralal in a trip.
