Marsabit is a small town on the main trans-Africa road north to Ethiopia.

Being set on a plateau 1000m above the surrounding desert plains, Marsabit is green year round and surrounded by thickly forested hills.

The town is known for its Rendille, a largely nomadic people with elaborate beadwork and hairstyles, who come to Marsabit to trade.

Mount Marsabit is probably the most attractive of the region's extinct volcanoes and the national park which surrounds it continues to contain a reasonable stock of game despite poaching in recent decades.

Marsabit Lodge seems to be the only sensible place to stay.
