South Horr is a small village 40km to the southeast of Lake Turkana and set in a beautiful green valley between two extinct volcanoes, a real oasis in an otherwise parched landscape.
There is some great hiking in the area, particularly on the forested slopes of Mount Nyuri, the flattened summit of which serves as a season grazing area for Samburu herds and offers superb panoramas of the surrounding landscapes and down to the lake itself.
The only sensible accommodation in the area is the high end Desert Rose Lodge, which serves as an extremely comfortable base from which to explore the area, largely on foot.
