Although it is a close call, there are probably even fewer visitors to this western side of Lake Turkana than to the east. The main reasons are that the sights are rather less varied and the road journey involves a good deal of backtracking.
The area is centred around the town of Lodwar, a busy trading post for the local Turkana people and attractions include the ribbon of fertile land along the Turkwel river, the Eliye Springs down by Lake Turkana and the active volcano that forms Central Island national park.
The potential for trips this way is further restricted by the closure, temporary or otherwise, of both Lake Turkana Lodge and Lobolo Camp.
