Central Nairobi is not somewhere the leisure traveller will probably want to linger long. Downtown is the classic mix of modern western city and crazy African town, with colourful kanga-clad ladies and red-robed tribesmen mixing shoulder to shoulder with smart modern business people, surrounded by the usual swarm of hawkers, rogues and vagrants.
By day this is a vibrant, bustling, noisy city where one is generally safe to wander and explore, but by night it turns into quite a threatening and dark place where one had better not set out on foot.
The Norfolk Hotel may be famous, but it is also rather disappointing and overpriced. The Fairview Hotel is our more regular haunt, essentially a lower cost version of the same.
