Karen is a quiet suburb of Nairobi, about 10km to the southwest of the city centre, between Nairobi National Park and the foot of the Ngong Hills.
Anyone who has seen the film Out of Africa will know that this is where Karen Blixen had her farm and to this day the area remains a rather upmarket suburb far removed from the urban hassle. As well as the Karen Blixen Museum, the Langata Giraffe Sanctuary and the Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary are both in the vicinity, with Nairobi National Park and Carnivores Restaurant not too distant.
For quirky accommodation it does not get any finer or more pricey than the magnificent
Giraffe Manor, whilst other high end options include
Macushla House and
Ngong House.
