Tsavo West

Tsavo West lies between the main Nairobi to Mombasa road and Mount Kilimanjaro.

The most interesting sections of the park are those to the south and west, which are least affected by the minibus traffic from the coast in particular.

The area is best known for its broad red plains, whose endless acacia scrub and occasional waterholes provide sustenance to a population of elephants which is much recovered from the terrible poaching of recent decades.

The park has a very limited range of accommodation, being dominated by large motel lodges, meaning that Tsavo West usually ends up being dropped from most itineraries in favour of better serviced areas.
