Historically Kisumu rose to a position of importance as a transport hub, being both a major station on the Mombasa train line and the major port on the lake.
In recent decades the port has fallen into disrepair and is now a shadow of its former self, although plans are afoot to get the place moving again.
The city itself remains a rather sleepy relaxed kind of place, noticeably warmer and more humid than the surrounding hinterland.
