Naivasha is a major Rift Valley lake, the first that one encounters when travelling out by road from Nairobi.
During colonial times Naivasha hosted the infamous 'Happy Valley Set', who lived and partied to excess in the huge mansions and ranch houses that grew up around the lake.
These days Naivasha is a considerably less desirable address, with much of the shoreline now dominated by mass market tourist lodges and industrial flower farms, making a road safari into the area a rather unattractive proposition.
The best way to visit Naivahsa these days is to fly into one of a handful of the old estates to the southwest of the main lake which retain their former glory in fabulous technicolour.
