Likoma Island is the larger of two inhabited islands situated on the eastern side of Lake Malawi, very close to the Mozambique coastline.
To visit here is to step back in time ... seventeen square kilometres with just one small dirt road and two motor vehicles, the local people survive largely by fishing and shamba farming.
The island has a number of glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves, whose crystal clear waters offer some of the best diving and snorkelling in Malawi.
There is just one small lodge on the island, the wonderful
Kaya Mawa Lodge, plus the very pleasant
Nkwichi Lodge over on the mainland.
