Liwonde National Park is as close as Malawi gets to a decent game reserve.

Actually it is a very beautiful place with a mix of riverine, mopane and grassland habitats, with good populations of elephant, hippo and crocodile in particular, as well as really superb bird life. Increasing antelope numbers are leading to higher densities of lion and leopard, but Liwonde is by no means a cat park.

The lack of "big five" safari here is in some ways a blessing as it has helped to keep the crowds at bay. Liwonde is a beautiful, peaceful place to visit, a real favourite amongst more experienced Africa travellers.

Mvuu Lodge is the better of the two lodges.
