The town of Zomba used to be the capital of Malawi until the mid 1970's. Today it remains a vibrant place, with plenty of historic colonial architecture and some particularly interesting markets.
The Zomba Plateau to the west of the town is a beautiful upland area of forest and farmland, which offers some interesting walking, good birding and great views out over the surrounding country and down towards the distant lake.
The best place to stay here is the simple and quirky
Zomba Forest Lodge.
