The area around Windhoek is mostly undulating farmland, subdivided by endless fences and backed by stark granite hills.

Visitors needing to overnight in the area when passing through Windhoek international airport have the choice of staying in town or at one of the guestfarms round about.

The best lodge in the area by a long way is Eningu Clayhouse, which works particularly well as a rest stop on the first night of a self-drive trip.

Another useable option is Amani Lodge, which is not quite so pleasant, but does have the advantage of being out on the road to Sossusvlei.
