The vast majority of the region consists of a regular pattern of fossilised Kalahari dune ridges, which run almost exactly east-west, giving a distinctly stripy pattern to the satellite imagery. On the ground this translates as rather dull dry farmland.
The main road transit from the hills of
Grootfontein in the southeast to the river frontage at
Rundu in the northeast is notoriously uninteresting, but does connect the country with the
Caprivi Strip and on to the
Livingstone.
Eastern areas are of more intrinsic interest, notably bushmanlands around
Tsumkwe and to a lesser extent the
Khaudum national park.
