Swakopmund is the main coastal town of Namibia. It is a relatively compact and pleasant place, whose broad grid pattern streets contain a good number of historic buildings. Unfortunately in recent decades the town has been ravaged by some awful modern architecture, large areas rather more reminscent of East Germany than West Africa.
Swakopmund is generally included in budget tours as there is a good supply of low cost accommodation. The town has also gained a reputation as an active centre of overlanders, with dune-boarding, quad-biking and sky-diving all on offer.
Many of our self-drive trips avoid this area altogether these days, but when we do come through
The Stiltz is by far the most preferrable accommodation option.
