Unlike the rest of Rwanda, which is generally hilly and temperate, Akagera National Park is more flat and savannah-like. It is a very scenic location, with a good mix of ecosystems including riverine woodland, open grasslands and dominated by a string of lakes surrounded by papyrus swamps.
This could be a wonderful national park, but whilst it fails to draw significant visitor numbers, it continues to have trouble justifying its existence in a country where land pressure is extreme. As things stand the park suffers from serious encroachment by fishermen, poachers and cattle-herders. There is still some decent game, but domestic cattle are the most regular sighting.
This place needs help fast.
