Poivre Atoll is part of the Amirantes Group, 250km WSW of Mahe in the Seychelles.
The islands are named after Frenchman Pierre Poivre, governor of the Seychelles in the late eighteenth century, who was instrumental in the illicit spread of spice production from the Moluccas into the Indian Ocean, ultimately to Zanzibar. Also around this time, Louis XVII is believed to have stayed here after escaping imprisonment in France, from which derives the Seychellois claim royal decent.
The two main islands are linked by a man-made causeway. Both are covered in a mix of coconut and casuarina trees, but only the more northerly one is inhabited and is served by a small dirt airstrip.
The one lodge is the Poivre Island Hotel.
