The vast majority of self-drivers coming out of
Cape Town run out of time by the time they reach
Port Elizabeth, leaving this a much lesser visited area.
The main reason to continue further are the game reserves of the Eastern Cape. The likes of
Addo,
Amakhala and Shamwari may not be truly wild areas, but they can provide a relatively easy, comfortable and non-malarial safari option.
The coast may not be subtropical like that of
Natal, but
Sunshine Coast East has some beautiful remote coastal areas, whilst
Sunshine Coast West is a renowned surf spot.
Meanwhile
Cradock and Graaff-Reinet offers some of the most interesting and high quality options in the whole of the Karoo.
