Lesotho is an independent country completely surrounded by South Africa.
This mountain kingdom is one of only a handful of countries in the world whose lowest altitude is above 1000m. It is a wild land of stunning upland scenery, with remote tribal villages connected by pony tracks and largely without fences. Although South Africans are tempted here for skiiing and 4x4 trails, the main reason to visit remains the wonderful mountain pony trekking, the wild landscapes and the fascinating welcoming people.
The country is only connected to the outside world by a handful of mountain passes and contains only a very thin smattering of
good lodges.
