This area is dominated by the huge urban sprawl of two convergent cities. Johannesburg is the enormous commercial and transport hub for the whole region, whilst Pretoria is the more compact administrative capital.

Perhaps most interesting features of the region are the non-malarial game reserves in the Madikwe and Waterberg Mountains areas, where many of the lodges specialise in providing safaris for families with young children.

The best known attraction is perhaps Sun City, the great temple to gambling and family fun, located in the rather commercial Pilansberg area.

Rustenburg generally concentrates on providing weekend breaks for city residents.
