Although not in the same league as Nairobi, Dar is a big city, modestly interesting but not particularly attractive.

Many of our guests find themselves arriving or departing Africa through Dar es Salaam, but most manage to escape without having to overnight. The exception are those coming in on the late arriving KLM and Swissair flights from Europe, which necessitate an overnight stop here. Early morning departures usually overnight in Zanzibar Stonetown instead.

It may sound like a strange recommendation, but we have found the Dar Holiday Inn to be the best bet for a decent quality night at a reasonable price.
