Kilwa is a fascinating and little visited area of the Tanzanian coast 150km south of Dar es Salaam. The area is famed for its ancient Swahili ruins, some of the finest in East Africa.

We rarely manage to include Kilwa in trips at the moment for two reasons ...

Firstly we find that most guests want to head for the islands for their beach time, mainly Zanzibar of course, with those wanting this kind of remote historic Swahili Coast kind of place heading for Mafia, Pemba or Mikindani.

Second, there is presently a dirth of decent accommodation down here, neither of the two lodges listed here rate high enough for us to recommend.
