Mikindani is a small town close to Mtwara on the extreme southern coast of Tanzania.

Previously one of the most important slave trading stations on the East Coast and the starting point for Livingstone's final journey into the interior, modern day Mikindani is a forgotton backwater, practically a village except for the magnificent remains of Swahili and colonial buildings which serve as reminders of a more illustrious past.

The Old Boma Hotel is one of Tanzania's best-kept secrets and the primary reason to stay here. If you want a real taste of the old Swahili Coast rather than a more conventional beach stay and you are prepared to put up with the extra hassle of getting here, then this is cool.
