For many years the expat residents of Moshi and Arusha have used Pangani on the northern mainland coast for beach breaks whilst international visitors have tended to head for the islands of
Zanzibar,
Mafia or
Pemba.
The upside for Pangani is that it is beautiful, quiet and good value. On the downside, it is difficult to get to, does not have much if any good diving and, above all, it is not an island.
The situation may change over the next few years as more lodges spring up and transport links improve, but for now we find that it takes a very unusual set of circumstances for Pangani to come top of the beach options for a trip.
The leading lodge here is
The Tides.
