Zanzibar is the number one beach location in East Africa. It is a wonderful island, with classic tropical beaches, lush plantations, an incredible history and a fascinating culture.

Although visitor traffic through Zanzibar is now quite high, on the whole it remains resolutely untamed. There are however some beach areas which are definitely worth avoiding.

For beach accommodation our favourite areas are Matemwe and Pongwe.

Most guests end their stay on the island with a night or two in Stonetown.

For more remote beach options, either instead or in combination with Zanzibar try Mafia and Pemba islands.
