Fumba is a peninsular of land just to the south of Stonetown. Despite its relative proximity to the metropolis and the airport, this place feels quite remote. It is quite a long bumpy road through uninhabited scrubland down to the tip, where a small village and a single lodge occupy a swathe of more verdant vegetation.
Fumba does not offer the broad palm-backed beaches of the East Coast, which we tend to think of as the classic Zanzibar beach experience. Instead this is about quiet seclusion in an area devoid of tourism other than the one small lodge and the odd dive boat.
Fumba Beach Lodge is the only place to stay.
