Undoubtedly the best swimming beach on Zanzibar, as late as 1990 Kendwa remained a remote little spot with just one guesthouse of simple thatched bandas.
Since then the world and his wife have moved in. First it was colonised by ever larger guesthouses, luring the more discerning of the Nungwi backpacker crowds. The real shock came with the arrival of an enormous resort complex on the north end of the beach.
The guesthouse end of the beach may be busy now, but it remains a very cool hangout, of beachbars and rastas. Kendwa Rocks is the original and best lodge and we continue to recommend it generally to younger folks who are up for this type of more lively hangout.
