Pre 1990 Nungwi used to be a heavenly fishing village. Since then it has changed beyond recognition, with 20 or more different lodges of generally low specifications.

West Nungwi is now a very busy mess of backpacker lodges, centred around a couple of reasonably cool thumping beach bars. This is where the kids on overlands come to party.

East Nungwi is more quiet, with a dozen or so guesthouses and lodges of various quality strung out down the coast, taking advantage of one of the best beaches on the islands. Ras Nungwi is by far the most upmarket lodge in the area. Mnarani Beach caters reasonably well for much lower priced market.
