Paje & Jambiani

This southern end of the East Coast was the first to really cater for travellers pre-1980, with simple local guesthouses springing up left, right and centre. Back than Jambiani felt like a real happening place.

During the late 1980's however most of the backpacker traffic swung up to Nungwi in the north, leaving Jambiani feeling rather deserted and run down.

In recent years, as other areas of Zanzibar have become more busy, Jambiani has started to seem attractive once more. A good number of people have tried upgrading the old guesthouses or building from new, but few come up to the standards found in the Matemwe, Pongwe and Bwejuu areas to the north.
