This is an interesting section of coast. Despite its proximity to Stonetown, there has been relatively little development here and the area retains a pretty remote and rural atmosphere.

Chwaka Bay is not particularly pretty, but does have an interesting little village and fish market, as well as the ruins of some once impressive colonial bungalows.

The real idyllic spots however are in the coves to the north, which provide some of the best and most sheltered beaches on the island.

The best accommodation by far is at Pongwe Beach, an upmarket guesthouse on an absolutely stunning beach.
