Stonetown is the capital of Zanzibar, an incredibly historic city whose sultan held sway over a huge swathe of Africa for many centuries.

Today Stonetown remains a wonderfully authentic crumbling ruin of a place with a sweaty, brooding atmosphere. Guests expecting some sort of historic theme park will be disappointed, Stonetown remains somewhere to explore rather than tour.

For intrepid travellers the wonderfully chaotic 236 Hurumzi continues to define Zanzibar chic, whilst the Zanzibar Serena provides a more conventional respite from the heat and hussle of this fascinating town. The Dhow Palace provides the best mid-price alternative.
