Until the construction of the Zanzibar Serena, Tembo was the flagship hotel here in Stonetown, being located right on the front close to the palaces, in a converted merchant's house of some considerable architectural interest.
These days the hotel's star has faded somewhat. A large extension and expansion around the pool and beach area has turned this gentle old lady of a hotel into a rather more touristic, less characterful place.
We tend to use sister hotel, Dhow Palace as a first choice in this price range, although Tembo remains a decent alternative.
