Stonetown South

Historically the south of Stonetown used to be very much of a garden suburb, where Zanzibar royalty and the more distinguished British expats lived in some comfort. At Mbweni the presence of a large English church still manages to give an impression of the kind of quaint village life they were attempting to recreate.

These days the land has been much subdivided and walled plots topped with satellite dishes and barbed wire predominate. Overall the proximity to town, air traffic overhead and the lack of good beaches detract from the allure of the area.

Of the offshore islands, Chumbe Island is the most notable, marked by a lighthouse and with a genuinely interesting lodge.
