Karatu is an area of very beautiful high altitude farmland ... coffee plantations, shambas and thatched villages ... on the southern entry of the Ngorongoro Highlands.
The main reason to stay here is as a staging post for the Ngorongoro Crater ... many people preferring to stay here than at the more touristic and pricey options inside the reserve.
But one should not lose sight of the fact that this is a beautiful location in its own right. Lodges such as Gibbs Farm make great places to hole up before or after a safari ... to experience rural 'red-road' Africa, walking, cycling and generally taking it easy amongst beautiful surroundings.
