North of the Ngorongoro Crater a single road runs across high altitude grasslands, surrounded on all sides by volcanic peaks, ultimately reaching a dead end at the mysterious Empakai Crater.
Very few people venture up this way, it feels very remote, much more so than one might imagine possible only an hour or so from the
Ngorongoro Crater ... it really is a different world out here.
The main reason to come out this way is to camp on the rim of
Empakai Crater and to hike down to the crater lake ...
... optionally followed by the spectacular two day trek via
Acacia Bivouac, down the Rift Escarpment to Lake Natron.
