Heading southwest from the Ngorongoro Crater, a red road leads south across some quite open high altitude grasslands, past thatched Maasai villages and on into acacia filled valleys.
Not many folks come down here, the large village of Endulen is of little interest and the Laetoli fossil footprints have been covered over to protect them from the elements.
The main reason that we visit is to camp at
Ilmisigiyo Bivouac, near to a village of the same name, basecamp for the tough but very scenic single day hike over the volcanic Mount Makarot and down to on the southern plains of the Serengeti.
