Behind the large Maasai village of Ilmisigiyo is an acacia forested valley in which there is a basic campground, where we place a simple dome tented bivouac.
This is basecamp for the superb 6 to 8 hour hike up over Mount Makarot and down to
Olduvai Camp on the south Serengeti plains.
The walking is quite tough and at relatively high altitudes, so you need to be reasonably fit and the camping is pretty basic, but the rewards are high.
Spending time with Maasai in this way is a real high and vastly broadens the overall safari experience.
