The arid East African plateau in this region is dominated by the looming, cloud-concealed presence of Mount Kilimanjaro ... the highest walkable mountain in the world.

Mount Meru which lies to the west of its larger neighbour, is not a climb of the same stature, but is sometimes used as a warm-up.

Kilimanjaro Airport is a major international port of entry and exit for visitors to both this region and the safari areas of Northern Tanzania.

Other areas in this region, including the Mkomazi and West Kilimanjaro safari areas, the Pare and Usumbara mountains, remain under-developed and little visited.
