Up until 2005 Machame was one of our favoured routes on Kilimanjaro, a tough 5 or 6 night trek of good scenic variety.

But over the course of about six months in 2005 an avalanche of budget operators abandoned the Marangu route as a lost cause and shifted over here.

Machame now has the highest climb traffic of any route on the mountain.

We pulled our group climbs at the end of that 2005 season and, moving them over to the much quieter Rongai route. This has been such a success, both in terms of customer feedback and summit success, that in 2006 we stopped using Machame completely.
