Marangu is a large village which backs up against the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, about an hour drive north of Moshi.
The park gate here is the trail head and foot for the main Marangu Route, the primary low-quality high-volume route on the mountain.
The gate also acts as the registration point for the far more interesting Rongai Route, which means that trekkers need to stay here in Marangu the previous night in order to register, before driving around to the trail foot in the remote northeast.
There are no really outstanding lodges here, we tend towards Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort or the Kibo Hotel.
