The Usumbara is a range of granite mountains which rise from the high East African plateau and cascade down towards the coast.

The range is divide into two by the north-south Lwengera Valley. To the west walking trails in the mountains are generally accessed from the historic village of Lushoto. To the east the Amani Nature Reserve contains some of the most bio-diverse rainforest in Africa.

Whilst we do find the Usumbara most attractive, the reality is that for most people it is simply too peripheral.

Serious walkers are quite rightly deflected away by the greater attractions of Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro and Natron.
