Rubondo island in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria is one of Tanzania's least visited national parks.
The fact that Rubondo is an island is not the important part ... beaches on Rubondo are not spectacular by any stretch and swimming in the lake is not a good idea. The main interests here lies in the interior. The island is largely covered with a range of eco-systems from lush tropical forest to open grass-covered hills, home to elephants, giraffe and many other species. Most interesting is the presence of chimpanzees, although they are not presently habituated, so quality encounters are extremely difficult.
The main reasons not to visit are the difficult in getting here and the lack of any really decent lodging.
