Gombe was made famous in the 1980's by American primatologist Jane Goodall, whose work here brought the plight of chimpanzees to the attention of the world.

Nowadays Jane is no longer here and due to land encroachment accellerated by the arrival of refugees from Rwanda after the genocide, there is now barely enough land to sustain a viable chimp population. As one researcher wept to us over a beer one night ... "the chimps are dying, Gombe is dying".

We no longer include Gombe in our trips, having determined that it will probably be better in the long run to concentrate resources on the hopefully more sustainable Mahale Mountains to the south.
